El Cactus Mexican Grill

I grew up in southern California eating Mexican food, and I've lived in Iowa City for almost 40 years. And I can say, unequivocally, that I had the best Mexican meal that I've ever eaten in Iowa City at this restaurant. The sauces were tasty. The rice and beans authentic, the portions generous. The steak was actually real steak! I've only eaten there once, but I will be back.

Giant and tasty burritos and great open atmosphere. The waitress was incredible as well and made sure we were enjoying our experience. Will go again.

Excellent Mexican food. I thought this was going to be kind of typical, rather disappointing, Americanized Mexican food, but no. I ordered a regional specialty just to see if they would get it right, and they did. They also have a good selection of Mexican beers.

This is a restaurant a have always liked it had good food my sister loves the kids menu and it is good quality.

The best Mexican food we've had in the Cedar Rapids/ Iowa City corridor. The owner was amazingly kind, and even brought us some additional salsas from the back to try. The portion sizes were really generous and the food came quickly. The margaritas were good (and strong!) The atmosphere was nice and clean. They have a nice outdoor patio/ seating area as well. We are anxious for a return visit!

Food is really good and great atmosphere

This wasn't a great experience....ordered take out and was told it would be ready in 10 minutes, so I showed up in 10 minutes and went to the bar rail to pick it up. Server walked past several times without acknowledging that I was there and there was another gentleman waiting as well. Finally after 15 minutes went past, they finally brought my food. Also, there was an older gentleman on staff that was just standing in the back looking out and not doing anything. The only reason I gave three stars was due to their food being good. I brought it home and we devoured it, minus the guac.

Not our favorite style of Mexican food but good none the less. Both the salsa and queso n warm chips were very tasty.

Our lunch was delicious and the service was warm and friendly. The atmosphere was comfortable and clean. We will definitely be back the next time we're visiting Iowa City!👍

First time visiting here and i was not disappointed. The food was very good, lots of fresh flavors. Portions were good. We all left full. The staff and environment was pleasant. I definitely see us returning.
